bestiary.
General Wildlife
just a bunch of your regular run of the mill ( and most definitely friendly ) neighborhood wildlife such as amphibians, birds, cats, deer, fish, foxes, lizards, mice, rabbits, and other small mammals.
Eagles
for many of you the only encounter you'll have with an eagle is to see it majestically flying overhead, because, for the most part, they keep to themselves... hardly ever going out of their way to hurt anybody. however, if you accidentally wander into their nesting grounds, then you may not leave alive, because mama and papa bird are both going to get very angry very quickly. these big birds have sharp beaks and honed claws and they're not afraid to use them.
Bears
the bears are big and tough and hungry... oh my! what makes them a problem is the fact that they're not afraid to leave the forest and wander into town in search of food. this used to simply amount to raiding dumpsters and trash cans, but more recently they've been starting to break into houses and business... tearing down anything and anyone in their path.
Snakes
because of all of the swampland there’s an overabundance of snakes slithering around, and they come in all shapes and sizes. some of them are harmless, like little gardener snakes, but then some of them are dangerous, like venomous snakes… with which one or two bites is enough to make a person feel anywhere to feel mild to severe discomfort. in the swamp, itself, you might even stumble into the mouth of one of its many anacondas.
Wolves
there are two rival packs of wolves roaming around - the swamp wolves and the forest wolves, and they'll attack anything that sets foot in their territory, including each other. the swamp wolves are larger and much stronger and the forest wolves are faster and more agile. if you encounter either, then you better be ready to fight for or run for your life.
Cougars
reclusive by nature, cougars don't hunt in packs, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous. they're ambush predators, so under the contain of darkness and hidden in the dense underbrush or in the leafy treetops they'll exercise their excessive patience and stalk their prey until the perfect moment to strike arrives. they mostly try to avoid people; however, something's got them spooked, so they've been more active and aggressive in the defense of their territory.
Elk
if the bears, wolves, and cougars had you worried, then you're in for an even worse time, because the elk roaming around the area are not your run of the mill elk. there must be something in the swamp water, because these elk are much larger and more aggressive, and the males aren't afraid to call you out and show you that their antlers aren't just for attracting mates. what's even more frightening is they've recently become omnivores, so you may be on the menu if you're not careful.
Alligators
there are dozens of alligators in the waters of northtown - in the rivers, swamps, lakes, and even in the sewers! during the day they can be found lazing about on the shores, basking in the sun, or floating in the water looking eerily like logs. they predominantly hunt at night, stealthily grabbing and dragging unsuspecting people and animals to a watery grave.
Sharks
it shouldn't be possible and yet there's evidence to the contrary right before your very eyes - there are sharks in the lake. if you stay near the shore, then you'll likely never have a run in with one of them. however, if you decide to go for a swim, then you run the risk of getting nibbled on, because all that splishing and splashing is going to do is bring the unwanted attention of lots and lots of jaws.
"Meg*"
there are rumors that there's something big living at the bottom of the lake, but nobody's ever been able to completely debunk them... especially not with all the strange happenstance going on. the fog makes it hard to tell if that's a sailboat or a sharkfin. is that the rumble of a motorboat or a megalodon? is that huge tooth legit or is someone playing a prank...
* Meg is an NPC, so if you'd like to try to encounter her, then please @ Technicians on discord.
* Meg is an NPC, so if you'd like to try to encounter her, then please @ Technicians on discord.
Scarecrows
the scarecrows can be found on the farm and at most houses in shadowpeaks. they’re inconspicuous enough, overseeing the varied assortment of vegetables and fruits. if you take any of the crops they’re guarding, then they’ll come to life wielding sharpened metal sickles and start attacking people without fear, without mercy, and without prejudice. they cannot be reasoned with, and they only want one thing: to make you into a scarecrow by killing, stuffing, and hanging you out in the field.
Featherface*
if you do a little digging then you'll come to find that meg isn't the only legend of shadowpeaks, and that there were numerous rumors circulating about the lake and, more specifically, a curse. they say that a pair of twins drowned, with the boy trying to save the girl, and allegedly nobody tried to help them... so now the boy keeps coming back. the sharks don't hold a candle to this prolific serial killer, because he's an undead and unstoppable killing machine. he's the iconic madman that haunts twilight lake and the surrounding area, driven to slaughter anyone he encounters by a burning need to avenge the death of his beloved sister. if you see a murder of crows, then be especially wary, because the follow him like winged rats... knowing that blood is about to spill and a body is about to drop.

Zombies ( Normal )
this cookie cutter zombie needs no introduction, but they get one anyway. grey skinned with chunks of flesh missing from what would have been their mortal wounds, these low intelligence creatures groan for brains as they shamble towards you. easily deterred by closed doors and closer targets, the danger lies in their quantity than quality. hopefully you're able to keep the horde thinned before they overwhelm you.
Chargers ( Special )
here comes the zombeef, and at ~20mph you better get the hell out of the way, unless, of course, you’re interested in becoming a painted smear on the wall. the ‘Charger’ is one of the special infected, having mutated into what’s essentially a brick shithouse on legs. its bulky appearance can be a bit misleading… but this infected neither stumbles nor bumbles, instead spearheading the charge into unsuspecting groups of survivors to lay down a smackdown.
Hunters ( Special )
clad in a ripped hoodie and looking like high school hooligan, the hunter lurks in the shadows. it’s not like its infected brethren and is, instead, an opportunistic huntsman, letting other zombies draw first blood and leaving them to distract idols as it creeps and crawls among the horde. however, it’ll eventually make a predatory leap at a breakneck speed, ensuring it gets to its unfortunate ( and unsuspecting ) target – you!!! - to RIP and TEAR© before you can realize and retaliate.
Smokers ( Special )
something lingers at the corner of your vision. watching. waiting. its heavy raspy breathing giving its position away more than anything else. through the unnatural hazy smoke, you glimpse a tall lanky figure with four writhing tentacles in place of a mouth. though just as you squint to get a closer look -- it's gone again. ... or is it?
Spitters ( Special )
the spitter is a gangly young lady whose proportions have been stretched out and stretched thin, leaving her body literally split at its seams. bloody sinews of discolored flesh actively drip and drop off of her as she dawdles around, dead-eyed and slack-jawed. the spitter might look brain-dead, but looks can be deceiving, and like a sharpshooter she can easily hauk the infection festering in her gut in your direction to burn away any hope you still have.
Spinner ( Special )
the spinner is an arachnophobic’s worst nightmare. this over-sized spider is the worst of both worlds, with its web-slinging & venom-spitting. normally found on ceilings and walls – out of sight & out of mind – it can and will drop down to surprise its target. a surefire sign that a spinner is nearby is the excess of web clinging to every surface. it’ll also leave the skeletal husks of its former victims spun in cocoon-like structures as a warning. cw; spider picture.
Ivy ( Special )
ivy are semi-humanoid plants with large, blooming pods for heads. they don't have arms in the traditional sense, but rather a number of tentacle-like vines that they use to whip & strangle their targets. they can also use them to drain their targets of blood, so you want to avoid getting too close to them. they are incredibly slow, which works to your benefit, but their large flower pod can open to release deadly toxins, which will poison you.
"Karen"
karen was a simple crocogator who always found herself wanting more. she eventually grew sick of the swamp life and left on a journey of self re-discovery. along the way she met kevin, and the two instantly hit it off. that's how karen ended up in the recreation center with her family. it was the safe haven that kevin introduced her to, but recently... a group of young hooligans chased her out, but she'll have her revenge. just wait until she tells kevin and together they find and talk to your manager!
"Audrey III"
audrey III is a monstrous carnivorous plant that lives in the greenhouse. he doesn't have patience for intruders, so uninvited guests will be thrown out. if you continue to bother him, then you'll be skewed by spiky tentacles, torn apart, and then eaten. ( the magic number is 3. ) plant adjacent people will be tolerated, but do be mindful while in his space, because he's incredibly territorial. he's a sagittarius and enjoys music, poetry, the sound of rain, and bloody marys.
*Updated@Day45*: An Apple Tree has appeared and Audrey guards it. A sign hangs nearby: a joke you must speak, if it's an apple you seek.

Pixie, Bucky, & Shredder
pixie's pizzeria was a family owned & operated restaurant, providing only the most delicious oven fresh pizza while you enjoyed its state of the art entertainment via its singing & dancing animatronic mascots. sometime later it was discovered to be nothing more than a front for the blackwood family, who were smuggling ephemerol ( a sedative & hypnotic said to really blow your mind ) into shadowpeaks. the pizzeria was raided by police █e██em█er of 1██4, but the family refused to be taken alive and, instead, took their own lives. ever since then there are rumors about the animatronics coming to life and terrorizing patrons stupid enough to stick around past dark, ...but that couldn't have anything to do with the blood, drugs, & pentagram found at the scene of the crime, right?
"Fauna*"
did you ever hear about why featherface kills? from the unhinged ramblings of a madman you could have gleamed that the facility promised him they'd bring his beloved sister back if he killed enough people; however, they never did keep their end of the deal and honestly... they never intended to. 'fauna' is featherface's twin sister, and the girl that drowned in twilight lake. she was subsequently taken to the facility and experimented on until she became the monster she is today. permanently emaciated, her hunger is insatiable, so she needs to feed or else she loses what little sanity she's got left. if you encounter her, then your best bet is to run, because if you make eye contact with her, then she can not only share her ravenous appetite with you, but she can also manipulate you into becoming one of her malformed puppets.

Frightscreamers
frightscreamers are flightless bat-like creatures that thrive in the darkness and reside ( mostly ) in the abandoned building. they're capable of emitting high frequency sound pulses through their mouths to disrupt your ability to use your powers ( .flip to determine whether or not you can use your powers - heads 👍 you can & tails 👎 you can't ) and while the effect only lasts for about a minute... sometimes that's the difference between life & death. they're also equipped with tentacles, which they use to grab and drag their prey closer.
Fog
the fog that lines shadowpeaks' invisible & electrified "cage" is more ominous and more oppressive, and there's definitely something out there, but what that something is depends mostly on YOU*. the monsters that inhabit the fog are subconsciously manifested by a person's strong negative emotions, memories, and/or experiences ( such as fear, sadness, trauma, etc ). due to their existence being directly tied to a specific person they're often symbolic in appearance, behavior, and/or temperament. they can ( and oftentimes will ) pursue you, so don't think you're safe just because you've escaped the fog. keep your phone handy because ( crappy as it is ) it'll emit static in the presence of these monsters. and if you do find yourself in a spot of trouble, then the cul-de-sac is the safest place to be, since each apartment building and every house is equipped with a floodlight to ward off the monsters.

Terror of Twilight Lake; Meg the Megalodon
if you oocly decide that you'd like your character to encounter meg, then please be aware that there is a chance that they'll get either hurt or killed. we'll be using RNG to determine the results, so please do NOT throw your hat into the ring if you're not comfortable getting your character potentially eaten.

(frozen comment) Zombie Outbreak; Hospital 🏥
the results are as follows:
1-13 SAFE; YOU’VE ESCAPED.
14-18 HURT; YOU’VE GOTTEN BITTEN*.
19-20 DEATH; YOU’VE BEEN KILLED.
* if your character is bitten, then they're not going to turn into a zombie. instead, they'll merely become infected for 1-2 IC days, which means they'll exhibit any number of the following symptoms: pale & clammy skin, deceased body temperature, sensitivity to light, insomnia, severe paranoia, increased aggression, insatiable hunger, develop an oral fixation, or a sudden lack of self-preservation.
after the 1-2 IC day period the symptoms will go away on their own, as will the zombie related injury.
if you roll a 19-20, then roll a 1d5 to determine which zombie killed you. 1 for a Normal Zombie, 2 for a Charger, 3 for a Hunter, 4 for a Smoker, and 5 for a Spitter.
(frozen comment) Pixie's Pizzeria; Cursed Animatronics 🍕
i'm sorry this is more involved than all of the other ones. if you have questions ping pulse.the animatronics will only ever try actively killing your character at night. during the day they stay on stage playing all star every hour on the hour. occasionally they'll play a different song.
first .flip a coin. if you get heads, then they're active and if you get tails, then they're inactive.
if you got active, then .roll 1d3 to determine who you'll encounter.
1 - Pixie the Cat
2 - Bucky the Deer
3 - Shredder the Shark
and finally each animatronic behaves differently, with pixie being the least likely and shredder being the most likely to hurt/kill you.
